Know Your Pleats Quantity

Pleat count determines the look and fullness of your curtains. Learn how to calculate it correctly for every heading style.

The Basics

What Is a Pleat?

A pleat is a fold of fabric gathered and stitched at the top of a curtain panel to create fullness, structure, and decorative texture. The number and type of pleats are what define a curtain's heading style โ€” the visual identity of the panel from its top edge.

More pleats create a fuller, more formal look. Fewer pleats produce a streamlined, contemporary appearance. The pleat quantity is determined by the finished panel width and the fullness ratio of the heading style you choose.

"Getting the pleat count right is the difference between a curtain that looks bespoke and one that looks off-the-shelf."

Pleated Heading Styles

Each heading style creates a different silhouette. Here is a quick overview of every style available at HavenDrapes.

๐Ÿ‘”
Pinch Pleat

The classic pleat โ€” fabric pinched into 2 or 3 fingers and stitched at the base. Formal and timeless. Works with most rod and track types.

๐Ÿงบ
Triple Pleat

Three-finger pinch with 2.3ร— fullness. Creates the fullest, most luxurious pleated look. Ideal for floor-length panels in formal rooms.

๐Ÿชก
Goblet Pleat

A rounded, cup-shaped pleat resembling a wine goblet. Elegant and sculptural; often padded lightly to hold its shape.

๐Ÿ“
Inverted Pleat

Pleat folds face inward (toward the wall). Creates a clean, flat front with hidden fullness โ€” contemporary and graphic.

๐ŸŽ€
Box Pleat / Tailor Pleat

Symmetrical folds extending outward on both sides. Structured and tailored โ€” works beautifully in modern or Scandinavian interiors.

ใ€ฐ๏ธ
Ripple Fold

Uniform, wave-like folds created by a specialized tape on a ceiling track. A contemporary, minimal look with consistent S-curve ripples.

The Formula

How to Calculate Pleat Quantity

Pleat count is calculated from your finished panel width and the heading style. The general formula is:

Number of Pleats = (Finished Panel Width รท Pleat Spacing) โ€“ 1
where Pleat Spacing is determined by the style (typically 4โ€“5 inches between pleat centres for standard styles).

In practice, you simply enter your finished panel width when ordering and HavenDrapes will calculate the exact pleat count during production. However, knowing the approximate count helps you visualise the final look.

Example Calculation

You would like a pair of pinch-pleat curtains on a 100-inch rod. You will order 2 panels (one per side).

Step Detail Value
Rod full length Total track end-to-end 100 inches
Fullness ratio (Pinch Pleat) 2ร— default ร—2
Total fabric width needed 100 ร— 2 200 inches
Panel quantity Pair รท 2
Single panel width to order 200 รท 2 100 inches per panel

HavenDrapes will calculate the exact pleat count for a 100-inch panel during production. For a fuller look, you may add an optional 1.25ร— multiplier on top.

Visual Impact

Choosing Your Fullness Level

Fullness controls how rich and voluminous your curtains look when closed. Our default ratios are optimised for an elegant, tailored appearance โ€” not too flat, not overly puffy.

Fullness Level Look & Feel Best For
1.5ร— Fullness Flat, minimal folds Contemporary, minimalist interiors
2.0ร— Fullness (default) Elegant, moderate volume Most residential applications
2.3ร— Fullness (triple pleat) Full, dramatic volume Formal rooms, high ceilings
2.5ร— + Fullness (extra full) Very lush, hotel-style Large windows, luxury applications

If you prefer a fuller look than our default, simply select the extra fullness add-on during configuration โ€” it is priced proportionally to the additional fabric used.
